Greek Yogurt Taste Test

I always hear mixed reviews on greek yogurt, so I decided to try a few different kinds.  Here's what I thought.

Oikos was... okay.  I wouldn't buy it again unless I couldn't find anything better.  There was nothing horrible about it, but nothing great.  I don't know if they have a 0% fat one or not, I was just grabbing at random one day in the grocery store.  It was really sweet, but not in a good way.  I do not recommend, unless there is nothing else on the face of the planet to purchase.

Chobani was very good!  I loved the thickness, tartness and perfect amount of sweet.  I would definitely buy this again, but only on sale or with a coupon.  I went to a store and they only had Chobani vanilla... I must say that was not that good, I would probably only buy the fruit flavored ones.

DISGUSTING.  It was really cinnamoney and creamy, I am pretty sure it left a layer of butter fat tasting stuff in my mouth.  I didn't eat the whole thing because I couldn't figure out what was going on with it.  I hadn't read the whole label, so when I started eating it, I thought this isn't really vanilla - it's more like brown sugar... well I guess it was "Vanilla, Cinnamon Orange flavored".  What?!  It was still a buck, and when you can get the good stuff for about 25 cents more, stay away from this.  IN MY OPINION.  I regret giving the underdog a chance in this case.  Bummer.

FAGE!  Fa-Yeh, however you say it.  This was DELICIOUS.  Very thick, just tart enough where the topping on it was amazing and almost guilty.  This is the greek yogurt they are talking about when they say to substitute it as sour cream.  Very good.  I have also seen people buy plain Fage in larger containers, portion it out then top it with some sugar free preserves.  I like variety, so I would pay extra per serving to just have all different kinds.  Plus, look at the container.  It's cute how it has two compartments.  I did not regret this purchase. :)  Not one bit.

160 cals, 25 g carbs, 20 g sugars, 100 mg sodium, 14 g protein
I bought a little four pack of these after reading other blogs and seeing how greek yogurt was taking over the world.  I hated this crap.  It tastes like sour baby diapers to me.  Not that I sit around eating sour baby diapers, but if I did - I imagine it would taste much like this.  I actually tried this FIRST, ever, for all greek yogurts and never bought another one for months.  I threw 3 cups away.  Ugh.  Sour.  Runny layer surrounding it.  Fruit is even sour.  Too thick, in a cement-like, scary way.
 IN MY OPINION ONLY.

And the winner is!!!!!!!!
FAGE!!  Oh Fage, how I adore thee!  Yes, this has become a regular part of my life and I love it.  I live in no man's land, so I have to drive 45 minutes away to find a grocery store that actually has good variety.  My local store doesn't even carry Fage, period.  When I go, I buy about 15 cups of it; whether it's on sale or not.  When I get home, I line them up in my fridge with the nearest expiration date first.  Makes for easy selection and packing my lunch/snacks for the day.  I like to add walnuts to it.  I like to use it as sour cream.  I just love it.  I highly recommend this!  I would def try it plain with fresh fruit vs. using the little compartment of sauce that it comes with; but haven't got around to it... yet.
 I highly recommend this.

This little 'taste test' started as an idea back in late August.  It was a fun little project to do and I hope readers can benefit from it, or share opinions.  Do I have to put that 'disclaimer' nonsense - I'm not paid or asked or bribed or yodda, yodda, yodda.  Opinion only, but.... I am one smart cookie.  :)

  1. I haven't really liked a lot of the greek yogurts I've tried. But I'm a HUGE fan of Zoi. If you can find it, I totally recommend the honey flavor. :)

  2. I really like FAGE too. Our store hasn't carried the cherry in a long time. I miss it!!! I also use fage in making mac n' cheese - totally awesome! :)

Haven't seen Chobani, but I'll be sure to keep my eye out for it.

My mom absolutely adores Oikos. I tried and bleh...yuck.

I haven't even tried the other two brands, being a food snob - I didn't think those brands would be able to create something like Greek yogurt that is likeable. Now I know, THANKS.

I'll have to be on the lookout for Zoi as well.

  3. I buy the plain Greek yogurt and sweeten it myself with banana purée (I do this in a mini chopper). The banana purée cuts the tart taste. Sometimes I add berries, but I think I'm going to try walnuts too...

  4. Great review. Unfortunately, the only one I've been able to get my hands on so far is Oikos. I didn't care for it at all.

  5. I hate greek yogurt...the texture is weird (kinda thick and grainy), its got a bite to it, and it's pricey! I just cant bring myself to trying a different brand because I threw the other stuff out after 1 bite!

  6. Fage is by far my favorite, lately I have been buying the plain and using no cal sweetners in it, fresh fruit or granola to add flavor and taste, it's lower in calorie and higher in protein. I like Dannon greek yogurt as well.

  7. I'm not a fan of the Greek yogurt. Just to sour tasting to me!

  9. Thanks for the review! I tried a dannon greek yogurt once and also thought it was way too sour. I'll give the fage and chobani a try...though at 21g of sugar (7 teaspoons...eeek!)...I may have to half into two days or something.

  10. strike that... it'd be more like 5.25 teaspoons, but still eek!

  12. Until I gave up sugar, I used to buy the Fage 2% with fruit like mad. I adored it. Well, I still ADORE it, tastewise, but now I just buy the FAGE 2% plain and put my own fruit, nuts, sugar-free/low-carb preserves. It's bar none the best Greek Yogurt I've tried available readily in supermarkets. I refuse to try the Dannon. Saw too many reviews about how it sucks. ; )

I love the texture. Decadent. I love that I can use it for dips and as a sour cream sub. But mostly, I adore it with fresh fruit, a bit of vanilla extract and sucralose, topped with nuts. :D Mmmmmmmmmm.

I used to also love the Emmi regular Swiss yogurt brand--especially the pink grapefruit and strawberry flavors. But again, dont want sugar.

And good for the intestinal tract and the health of the ladybits and bones. :D

Yep. Been a FAGE fan for a couple years here (discovered it through my food delivery service, mostly organics, like 3 or so years back).

    Later.

  14. I will have to try Fage. I like chobani but you are SOO right about the cost. My favorite one is the pineapple or the honey of Chobani. But I'll be trying Fage to see which flavors I like the best :D

  15. Chobani pineapple is my favorite :) Yum!

  16. Hmmmmm, I'll have to give Fage a try. I didn't like chobani or yoplait so much but then again I'm not a big yogurt fan so I thought it was just me... LOL. Chobani was ok when I used it in a smoothie. Next time I hit the grocery store I'll have to be on the lookout for Fage & give it a go:-)

  17. I had heard of greek yogurt from reading blogs and what bloggies eat. Although my diet is low carb, I was still interested because it is "new" food to me. Thank you for doing this review. I love to give yogurt to my grand babies. I was wondering...thanks. I will have some when I get into maintenance and I can have carbs here and there.

Also an excellent opportunity to add some Spanish lesson in here. The pronunciation "fay yah" is spelled "fea" in Spanish. It is the feminine of the word "ugly". The masculine counterpart is "feo". Here is something to practice:
"Estoy buscando a un hombre en Cabo que no es feo!"
Translated: "I am looking for a man in Cabo that is not ugly!"

  18. Actually, I understood the pronunciation to be akin to FAH YEH....not "fea". :)

  19. Yum Fage, yuck Yopliat! I agree. And I totally agree with Nanette, if you can find Zoi, try it out it is delish, but it is rediculous in the calorie department!

  20. Chobani is my favorite!! Thanks for reviewing all of these. I've had the plain fage but never the fruits flavors. :)

  21. I love yogurt and I've been wanting to try greek yogurt for the longest time. I'll have to look and see if our local Walmart carries Fage. If not, maybe our korger's does. Not much of a choice here for grocery stores. Ugh.

My problem, with yogurt, though is that I tend to not eat it once I have it. I love it but it seems like I "forget" about it once it's put up in my fridge.

  22. I also love fage. AND if you happen by a costco Kirkland puts out a greek yogurt that - if blindfolded and did a taste test - I could not tell the diff between the two. Cheaper.

I make cheese with fage. I strain it over a colander... yogurt into cheesecloth thightened around a shish kabob skewer and tied and left to thicken into a semi firm ball for a couple days. Later I unwrap and slice it or melon ball it. Top with fresh herbs, Cracked pepper, lemon... maybe some oil and/or vinegar - maybe have olives, tomatoes - or whatnot with it. Maybe over some crispy toast. YUM. I think it is called Labneh.
