August plans

I want to lose 25 pounds this month, I wonder if that's possible.  The lowest I remember being was a couple years ago and I weighed 273.  If I lost 25, I'd be down to 260 which would probably cause me to break into tears.  I am going to go hard on the exercise, I have been having some knee issues so I guess as hard as I can.  I have been working on carbs, I just need to really give them up for a couple weeks as a jump start for posting a big loss this calendar month.

I can't believe it's August.  That's just crazy.  I don't know where the time went.  I want to buy my cardio machine this month, I think I have decided to go with a bike vs. elliptical - thanks for the comments on my post asking for suggestions.  I have scoped Craigslist and will be contacting some sellers today.  I might even buy it this weekend which would be awesome.

That's my goal for August, the tasks to reach that objective will continue as they have been - with a bit of added boost in all areas.

  2. As long as you don't have a weirdly odd metabolism, and if you're willing to commit to a lot of exercise and very little calorically, yeah, you can do 25 lbs. :)

But it's more reasonable to set a minimum-doable and a maximum-hoped-for, and try to fall in between or better. Reasonable, for someone your size, would be 2 to 3 lbs a week. Maximum might be 3 to 5, with a lot of focus and The Biggest Loser type of commitment.

In 4 weeks, 8 minimum and 20 maximum would probably be a good range. 25 for "super duper hoped for",w hich can be done if you're holding a lot of water weight to start the month. :)

How's that? Too many numbers? hahah

I can't lose big weekly. My maximum with full exertion would be about 3. Mostly 1 to 2 is doable for me, and 2 meaning I really watched every bite and moved nearly every day for at least an 40 minutes of concerted effort. For me, losing 5 lbs a month right now is GOOD. :D

But you can do way better than that. Go for it! Go for that 8 to 20!

  3. I WISH I could afford me an elliptical - even a used one! Great goal for August... I can't believe we're in the 8th month of the year either... when did that happen?!? lol

  4. Great to have a goal! Sounds like you have a pretty good plan, if you find the no carb thing a bit challenging then you could try no carbs after 3pm or something like that, I tend to go a bit off the rails if I try to cut things out all together, but maybe that's just me.
I look forward to seeing how you go :-)

  5. Well you would be the one to watch if you do so. I think it is do able, though...I am so wishy washy mood wise that I am not sure if I could keep up to that...but hey lets do this bitch ok? It IS the beginning of the month...so let's look at that scale and go from there?

  6. In my first month losing weight I switched into a low-carb diet, and the weight just fell off - I think I managed 20.5 lbs down in the first 4 weeks. I added carbs back in after that, as I just wanted to kick-start the process, not lose them forever from my diet, and that's the tough bit really - not going back to my previous carb-binge, but bringing them back in steadily (and making them healthy carbs!). So yeah, I reckon it is do-able if you stick with the plans, but it ain't easy, so best of luck to ya for this month!

  9. I just got a treadmill.....and boy it's way easier to be motivated when you just have to go in the other room to use it, then to get dressed and drive all the way to the gym.....or outside in the heat.....

    Good Luck on your 25!!!!

  10. 5lbs a week? ...I never had a rate that high. I suppose it's possible, but I would encourage you to think more long term and try not to worry about the numbers so much. I mean, no matter how long it takes to lose 25lbs, the real challenge is keeping it off forever.

  11. I think you can do anything that you decide you are going to do. However I agree with princess dieter, perhaps setting a min/max goal would be a good place to start.

    Drink lots of water!

  12. Thanks for the responses. 25 is a bit much, eh? I think 3 pounds a week is doable, that puts me at 270 which is still lower than my lowest. Luckily August is a long month and we have 5 full weeks.

  13. Honestly, I do not think that is an amount you can lose in one month. I did not read what others have said above, but losing 5 pounds a week is just not reasonable.

Be kind to yourself and make reasonable goals so that you are not discouraged. It takes time to get healthy and fit, juts like it did to get obese and unfit. The important thing is not how fast you lose, but, that you, over time, become healthier and that along the way you learn more about yourself and what works for you.

For many years I fantasized that I could lose x amount of weight in a short period of time (you can read more about my fantasy here: http://ruminationsasiuncoverthewomanwithin.blogspot.com/search/label/fantasy%20and%20reality.

However, that is what it was a fantasy. So, my dear, my advice is to rethink your weight loss. Maybe not even focus on the weight, but just eating less and moving more. You CAN do this. It is hard and there are no QUICK fixes.

E mail me anytime. I care that you get fit and healthy. michele

  14. You guys are wonderful. Thanks for the comments. I'm setting the goal of 3 lbs a week which will be 15 - which is 270, still lower than my lowest in memory. If I do more, that's freakin awesome. If not, I'm still happy with the number. I am just getting anxious about the numbers, numbers, numbers because I'm sick of the high weight. I know it took a long time to get here, 29 years.... it won't fix in the 29 days of August. You guys rock, be blessed!
